ABRAHAM DICKERMAN
~Our Direct Line~
(1634 - 1711)
Birth and death date from the lineage papers of Robert Forsyth Little, Jr. for the Society of the Colonial Wars

The second son of  Thomas and Ellen Dickerman
was Abraham Dickerman, in our direct line.  He grew up in Dorchester and First Congregational Church.  He lost his heart to his future bride,  Mary Cooper of the New Haven Colony, when she came to visit Dorchester.  She was the daughter of  a well-to-do founder of the New Haven Colony and an early resident in New Haven, John Cooper.
Abraham and Mary were married in 1658/59 and made New Haven, Connecticut their home.
Abraham followed in the political footsteps of his father-in-law, John Cooper and he too served many terms in the General Assembly of the Connecticut Colony.
He bought the home on what is now New Haven Green, corner of Elm and Church streets, and lived there for many years.  He was made a Lieutenant in a local company of militia, and served on a committee to secure the charter for New Haven, helped to lay out the town of Wallingford, and led in a movement to enlarge and improve the First Congregational Church.  He was the moderator in the great New Light Controversy.  At 74 he finally had enough of it and resigned and went over and jointed the Blue Congregational Church.  It united with another Cong. Church and built on the green what was United Church in 1950.  In it is the Paul Revere Communion Cup that served on the Symbolic alter.
He died at age 77 and was buried in back of what is now the Center Church on New Haven Green.  The spot is not marked because the stones were removed over 100 years ago.  The original stone was found in the 1960's
along with his wife Mary's stone along the wall of the
Grove Street Cemetery nearby.

From American Marriages Before 1699
Cooper, Mary married Dickerman, Abraham 10 Feb 1658 in Dorchester, Mass.

From THE PUBLIC RECORDS OF COLONIAL CONNECTICUT
Vol 2:C, p. 5224 Freemen listed for New Haven Connecticut, 1669 include Abram Dickerman.
Vol.2 p. 202   Abram Dickerman signed the agreement establishing the boundaries for New Haven, Conn.
28 Jan 1673.
